A pilgrimage, held within a single painting.

This work maps the sacred landscape of Shatrunjaya through temples, shrines, processions and pathways. Rather than showing the site as a conventional landscape, the painting follows the experience of pilgrimage moving from one sacred point to another, allowing the viewer to encounter the journey visually.

Shatrunjaya, at Palitana in Gujarat, is one of the most important Jain pilgrimage sites. Painted tirtha patas such as this historically allowed devotees to contemplate the sacred journey even when they could not travel there physically.

The result is part map, part memory and part act of devotion a dense sacred landscape in which every temple, route and gathering contributes to the larger idea of pilgrimage
