The universe imagined in human form.

In Jain cosmology, Lokapurusha represents the structure of the universe through the form of a cosmic being. The figure is not a deity, but a visual map of existence itself — a way of understanding the different realms that make up the Jain universe.

The broad upper body, narrow waist and wider lower form correspond to different cosmic regions, each associated with distinct levels of existence. Within the figure, these realms are often shown through symbols, diagrams and carefully ordered imagery.

What makes Lokapurusha so fascinating is the way an abstract philosophical idea becomes immediately visual: the cosmos given a body, and the body used as a map.

It is one of the most recognisable images in Jain art, bringing together philosophy, cosmology and sacred geometry in a single composition.
