This artwork depicts Panchmukhi Hanuman, one of the most powerful forms of Hanuman. The five faces represent different divine forms and directions, each associated with a particular protective power.
At the centre is Hanuman. The other faces traditionally represent Narasimha, the lion form of Vishnu; Garuda, the eagle; Varaha, the boar; and Hayagriva, the horse-headed form. Together, the five faces symbolise protection in all directions and the combined strength of these divine forms.
Hanuman is shown with multiple arms carrying different weapons and sacred objects. You can see the trishul, sword, bow and arrows, mace and lotus among them. Each attribute represents a different aspect of divine strength — protection, courage, knowledge and the destruction of negative forces.
The scale of the figure is also significant. Hanuman dominates the composition while smaller human figures appear beneath his feet, making his supernatural form feel immense and almost beyond the human world.
Unlike the more familiar image of Hanuman as the devoted servant of Ram, Panchmukhi Hanuman represents his fierce, protective form — a manifestation associated with strength, vigilance and protection from every direction.
